Very important is to pay attention to the details when raised a puppy. Cane Corso is Mastiff breed grow too fast when overfeed and they are very smart in early age. Keep up with our advice will help you raise healthy strong, very well balanced and mannered dog.
Lets start from beginning
FIRST DAYS AT HOME
PUPPY PLAY PEN AND PLACE TO STAY
Its very important to raised Cane Corso puppy on the floor with very good traction. So make sure you prepare the place when puppy will stay. Puppies doesn’t have attached their bones and joints together and their cells plates .
Constant slipping, problems with maintaining body balance, daily tightening of muscles and tendons so as not to fall definitely leads to overexertion of these parts of the body. Floors such as laminate, tile and wood are slippery and not suitable for growing puppies. Puppies running around the house are at risk of injury. While running, they hit the legs of the table, the angular ends of furniture, jumping on and off high furniture like armchairs and sofas, falling on slippery floors. All this causes more or less consistent damage to bones, ligaments and joints. The consequences of such accidents, smaller or larger, visible or not, will effect development of the hips, elbows, knees and the entire bone and cartilage structure.
THIS IS PERFECT SET UP FOR PUPPY BETWEEN 8 AND 16 WEEKS OLD
Best ground for puppy is CARPET or RUBBER FLOOR in closed safe area. Puppies at 8 weeks old are already house broken, all you have to do is to take them every 2 hours outside.
BELOW WORSE FLOOR EXAMPLE FOR A PUPPY
…
Partial carpet is also not proper for puppy. Puppies are like little kids, difference is they don’t cry with every hit and fall, but consequences are the same. We should care for them at first 6 months like for our human babies, with care and safety for their future. They should play only outside where they belong by nature and where is safe environmental.
By adhering to these rules, you will avoid injury to your puppy, which will protect him from dysplasia or structural defects that later may lead to very expensive surgeries.
VERY IMPORTANT!!! Puppies up to 6 months old should never use stairs. Not only walk upstairs but also going down. House stairs are mostly polish wood that’s very slippery , carpet one will make obstacle for a puppy and fun but… cane corso puppy in very young age have knee at the edge level of each stair, and may injury every time when go up hitting the knee on it. Going down is very abnormal and will effect elbows if happens often. Best is to avoid it in most critique age up to 6 months old.
FOOD
You can believe it or not but how you feed your cane corso puppy have big impact in their health, condition and behavior.
Most people use kibbles. So if you decide to use only kibbles in their diet or more than 50% of it you can be sure your dog will end up with organs failure , weak body condition, poor bacteria floral in the body , frustration and much more. Kibbles are the worse food you can choose for your dog. There is no kibble brand or price that will make them healthy . Of course you can add them to the diet but using as a main food will bring consequences.
Puppy should eat raw food in general. If you want to cook and you know how to do is and not loose it nutrition from the food by cooking it than great. But this wont be easy and will absorb lots of time. In my opinion best and less labor is raw feeding. To do this proper all you have to do is to give DAILY SUPPLEMENTS DOSE (i recommend double the dose up to 1 year old, we practice that for many years and our dogs have perfect health score. Definitely Cane Corso puppy like all mastiffs grows different than regular dogs proportions are made for), MUSCLE MEAT AND ORGANS PROPORTION IN WEEK BASIS and BONES . All this will make your dog healthy and happy.
This is food example with proportions about 70% muscle meat, 10% organs and 20% bones plus supplements. But you don’t have to keep with % everyday the same. Most important to remember about supplements and weekly % for bones, meat and organs!
GOOD PROTEIN SOURCE ARE PORK, BEEF, POULTRY and FISH!
Very food idea to support growing puppies is BROTH FROM BONES plus GELATIN. This is perfect source of collagen and glucosamine! During the winter Vitamin D3 is a must!
VERY IMPORTANT!!! Keep your puppy very lean and fit. Fat puppies are like little kids with very heavy bareback all day long on their shoulders, sooner or later will injury something in the body and this will be also visible when over 12 months old !
As you can see ,people houses and artificial food isn’t good for puppies , neither for Adult dogs or Senior. If you really care for your puppy you should start best possible way to protect them and offer them most natural way of living.
FOOD BOWL SHOULD ALWAYS BE KEEP ON THE FLOOR! NEVER ON THE STAND!
HEALTHY LIFESTYLE
Here i want you to understand that healthy lifestyle is about all you do to raise healthy dog mentally and physically. Cane Corso is very old breed or as some says , very new breed but still comes from very old ancestors . They love being outside , they love work, baying busy make them happy. Some are high drive , some are less, but still all love to be outside. To raised well balanced dog make sure he spend most of the day outside or at least 2 to 4 hours a day. Some dogs need even more than that. Thta’s why make sure you understand the bloodline you are interested in . Cane Corso love time on sofa, sleep in the bed but this doesn’t mean they house dogs. They aren’t and if you are “stay at home” person , this dog will not be good for you. Dog will grow with frustration and even you not notice at first it will poop out with big aggression towards people or other animals.
First year is most important of their life. My suggestion is to take puppy classes at first and month after finish , start another one for novice dog training. Do not use ambitious trainers at the first . Start slowly, make one step at the time. Cane Corso learn extremely fast, you have plenty of time to learn obedience, but if you fail with good relationship and proper socialization, bad habits are hard to work out. They are extremely independent and they may not listen if you don’t ear their trust and respect in early age. ABSOLUTELY THE WORSE IS BOOTCAMP AND BOARDNG TRAINING obedience sessions. You will loose the dog faster than you think. Different view is when you purchase the dog as a SPORT DOG and you preparing for the trial. This is much more expensive and should be discuss with breeder and the trainer should be someone who ears by himself titles in such sports! Otherwise stay away. More poseurs around than you thing. But about this at the section below.
Make sure your dog have all basic classes passed.
I recommended AKC PUPPY START CLASSES, AKC CANINE GOOD CITIZEN (CGC), AKC CANINE GOOD CITIZEN URBAN (CGCU) and AKC CANINE GOOD CITIZEN ADVANCE (CGCA).
All this will take about the year and i warranty you , if you are going to earn those all titles your dog will be fantastic social dog with good manners. Classes are very easy , each takes between 6 to 8 weeks and cost very little. If you can’t do this for your dog, if you have no time DEFINITELY THIS BREED ISN’T FOR YOU. Cane Corso that stay at home with you, kids and other family members and have no “private time one on one” with owner , will never be happy. Dogs like that very often use their energy running after children, chasing cars, bikes , people etc… on the street, showing sign of attention when turns growling and aggressive, demolishing the house, dig holes in garden , ruining the garden, jump and nip on guests sometimes even attacking them and much more… list is very long. THIS DOG IS NOT MEAN TO BE AT HOME WITH YOU FOR 30 MINUTE WALK ONCE A DAY OR SMALL YARD USE.
